Benbulben, Co Sligo

Located in the northwest of the Province of Connaught, Sligo is also known as Yeats Country, which, along with County Leitrim, inspired Ireland’s most famous poet, William Butler Yeats. The megalithic cemetery sites of Carrowmore and Carrowkeel are located here and are some of the oldest and best-preserved sites in Europe. According to carbon-dating, these ruins are between 5700 and 5100 years old (3700 to 3100 BC) and pre-date the Egyptian pyramids. For more information about sacred megalithic sites, click here.
